Council invites feedback on proposed smoke-free declaration at Spreyton Waste Transfer Station

Devonport City Council has commenced public consultation for a proposed smoke-free area at the Spreyton Waste Transfer Station. Council recognises the importance of engaging the community in decision-making processes and seeks valuable input from residents, stakeholders, and interested parties.

The proposal to declare the Spreyton Waste Transfer Station as a smoke-free area aims to safeguard the health of non-smokers, including staff and facility users, by reducing their exposure to tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes and vapes, and to reduce the risk of fires in waste material. There is a designated smoking zone proposed to be located adjacent to the main gate.

“By converting the Waste Transfer Station into a smoke-free space, we are continuing our commitment to creating a safer and healthier environment for our community. This initiative aligns with the Council’s commitment to discourage smoking and support individuals in their efforts to quit and maintain a smoke-free lifestyle,” Mayor Alison Jarman said.

Throughout the public consultation period, Council invites community members to share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions regarding the proposed smoke-free declaration. By actively involving residents and stakeholders in the decision-making process, Council aims to ensure that all perspectives are considered.

Council acknowledges the importance of maintaining a balance between fire risk management, public health considerations and the needs of the community. Therefore, during the consultation period, alternative suggestions or proposals that address the concerns related to fire risk and smoking management will be welcomed and thoroughly assessed.

The consultation will be conducted via the Speak Up Devonport page on Council’s website at https://www.devonport.tas.gov.au/council/get-involved/speak-up-devonport/. Printed copies will also be available at the Council offices and an information sheet will be distributed on site.
Submissions can be made until 5pm on Monday 7 August 2023.
