Mayor’s Message – 22 July 2020

It’s really great to see local sporting groups, recommencing after they were required to shutdown due to COVID.  Football, hockey, soccer, touch football, running groups, netball to name but a few.  COVID restrictions and social distancing requirements mean that some of our sports look a little different this year, but it is great to see participants and spectators embracing the challenges and supporting their teams.

Throughout July, Council has been sharing footage of Devonport Jazz Festivals from years gone by on Facebook.  This weekend, the ‘Devonport Jazz in Retrospect’ YouTube channel will be released; this will include all the memories featured over the past few weeks, plus include some fabulous new performances that have filmed specially for this weekend while the musicians have been in lockdown.

Members of the public are now able to attend monthly Council meetings, however, to comply with COVID-19 social distancing requirements, a limited number of 10 people will be allowed.  Those wishing to attend should register by calling Council’s Executive Officer on 64240511.  Registrations will open once the agenda is available on Council’s website and close at 12noon on the day of the meeting.  Due to the limited number of attendees allowed, registrations will not be taken in advance.  Additional information, including information relating to public question time, can be found on Council’s website.

Changes to Road Closure Applications

From Monday 20 July, Council will request three weeks notice to close roads within the municipality – an extension of the current two week notification period.  Council will attempt to approve permits as quickly as possible and will continue to work with contractors to accommodate urgent or critical works approvals where possible.  Find the Guidelines and the Road Closure Application form on the website here.

Devonport Local Government Area road side weed management spraying is due to commence on Monday 3 August, by a contractor, weather permitting.

Property owners may request the City to not undertake spraying on the road reserve in front of or alongside their properties by applying to be listed on the City’s ‘No Spray Register’ on the Council Website. Applications require the property owner to provide a management plan identifying the method of control for weeds and how regularly the property owner plans to undertake this control.
