Private Burials

Private Burials

A burial on private land is a burial other than in a cemetery.

Provisions covering private or bush burials are contained in section 41 of the Burial and Cremation Act 2002.  Persons can apply in writing to the General Manager of Devonport City Council.  They will need to supply the following:

  • Written permission from the landowner
  • Copy of current land title
  • Detailed description of the proposed site of the burial

Council will then apply to the Director of Public Health (Department of Health and Human Services) for approval.

 

Burials at Sea

Yes, you can have a burial at sea, these provisions are also covered in Burial and Cremation Act 2002 under section 42.

The first step is to approach your Funeral Director.  They then apply to the Director of Public Health (Department of Health and Human Services) for approval.   Once this is obtained then Council will be notified by the Director
