Playgrounds to reopen on Monday

Residents have been reminded to observe all COVID-19 health advice and restrictions when Devonport City Council playgrounds, skate parks and fitness equipment reopen on Monday.

Mayor Annette Rockliff urged those planning to visit playgrounds to ensure they fully understood the restrictions imposed by the Government.

“All playgrounds are limited to 10 people at any one time and all people should practice social distancing as well as covering any cough or sneeze and not attending if at all unwell,” she said.

“Local parks and playgrounds can be used for activities such as picnics as long as there are no more than 10 people and social distancing is maintained with 1.5 metres between participants and only one person per four square metres.

“Outdoor exercise equipment can also be used but, once again, social distancing is required.”

A full list of the Government’s requirements can be found at https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au/families-community/current-restrictions

Cr Rockliff said she understood that some people may feel frustrated if they went to a play area but were unable to access the equipment because of the number of people already there.

“I know everyone wants to take advantage of the reduced restrictions, but we all have a responsibility to be sensible and behave appropriately,” she said.

“If there are a lot of people there, go and come back at another time or try another playground.

“Council will close playgrounds if it becomes aware that people are not sticking to the rules – it is that simple.”

Cr Rockliff said Council’s roadmap to recovery may look a little different from, and may not directly align with, the dates announced by the Premier last week.

“Council is currently undertaking a range of protective measures to make sure when our recreational spaces and facilities do open, the safety of the community and council staff is the highest priority.”

“Announcements about re-openings and dates will be published on our website and social media pages as they become available.”
