William Street renewal project to start next month

One of Devonport’s main roads will receive a $1.5 million renewal with works starting next month.

Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said a key element of the William Street Renewal Project, between Valley Road and Middle Road, is the reconstruction of the roundabout.

Cr Rockliff said the project will include two stages, with stage one focussing on new road pavement and surfacing, new kerbs and driveways to suit road level changes, and stormwater drainage improvements.

Stage two will focus on the Middle Road roundabout, which will be widened for safer traffic movement and includes upgraded traffic islands and wider paths for safe and improved pedestrian access.

“William Street is one of our busiest roads in the Devonport CBD and it’s important that Council continues to improve the safety and useability of this frequently used road and roundabout,” Cr Rockliff said.

“The roundabout will be widened to help improve safety by reducing circulation speeds of vehicles. The project also includes pavement renewal of the Valley Road intersection.

“The condition of the road pavement and intersection is deteriorating and with the high-volume of traffic William Street attracts on a daily basis, this is a priority project for Council’s 2022/23 Capital Works Program. Measures will be put in place to ensure the established trees on the western side of the road are protected and remain once the works are complete”

Cr Rockliff said the works will start early October and are expected to be completed by February 2023.

She said Council will continue to provide updates and encouraged road users to be patient during the works period.

“I’d really encourage motorists to avoid this section of William Street during the construction period if they can,” Cr Rockliff said.

“This is one of the major road renewal projects happening in our city and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation during this time.”

Cr Rockliff said other upcoming capital works projects include:

• Tarleton street renewal – Wright Street to River Road ($1.5 million).
• William and George St intersection renewal ($460,000).
• Steel Street footpath and stormwater upgrade (360,000).

“Council is committed to improving Devonport’s infrastructure and we know how important it is to improve our city’s liveability,” Cr Rockliff said.

“Our 2022/23 capital works program totals $11.4 million in new projects, in addition to $15 million of works currently funded and underway.

“All our projects are important and contribute significantly to the ongoing prosperity of our city.”
