Street trading adds colour and vibrancy

Devonport City Council recognises that street trading can add colour and vibrancy to the City’s streetscape.

Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said while street trading is also commercially beneficial to businesses, it’s important to ensure pedestrian safety is at the forefront.

Cr Rockliff said Council recently updated its Street Trading Policy and Guidelines, which requires all premises that lawfully operate and propose to use Council’s footpath or public areas, to either establish an outdoor dining area or carry out footpath trading activities, to have a Street Trading Licence.

“Street trading has the potential to really enhance our City’s liveability, and is important in attracting visitors and encouraging them to stay and enjoy all our City has to offer,” Cr Rockliff said.

“Council also recognises it’s important to continue to revitalise our City for our residents, so Devonport can be a place they are proud to call home.

“Council’s Street Trading policy and guidelines have been updated to ensure that the same rules apply to anywhere in the Devonport local government area.

“Previously only some areas of the City required licenses to enable Street Trading activities to be undertaken.

“Council officers will provide support and guidance to those businesses wishing to apply for a new licence.”

Cr Rockliff said Council will send out licence renewals in early August and encouraged members of the public to contact Council if they had any queries at [email protected] [1] or call (03) 6424 0511.
