New exhibition explores the perceptions and realities of life in regional Tasmania

The Natural Estate exhibition, which will open on Saturday 19 October, is the latest instalment in the Little Gallery’s Emerging Artist Program.

It includes works by Laura Gillam, Joey Gracia and Callum Donoghue, who all grew up in regional Tasmania and draw on their experiences to explore both commonly held perceptions and the realities of life in regional communities.

According to the artists, at the peak of Tasmania’s tourism boom, their exhibition explores the alternative to the narratives and landscapes presented by glossy pamphlets and travel magazines.

It also questions the popular representations of Tasmania as an island of dreams and possibilities, abundant with pristine wilderness and fine wine.

The Natural Estate features a series of drawings, paintings and installations that seek to uncover the stories of regional Tasmania not always apparent to visitors to the State, while exploring how we connect culturally in a State both isolated from and increasingly connected to the outside world.

Laura and Joey will lead a free public talk discussing these themes at the Little Gallery from 5 p.m. on Friday 18 October with the exhibition running from the following day until 24 November.
