This week promises to be a big one in the city for all lovers of squash with the $11,000 (US) 2019 City of Devonport Men’s Tasmanian Open beginning on Thursday.
The tournament is being conducted by the Devonport Squash Club in partnership with the Devonport City Council at the Devonport Squash Courts in Forbes Street.
It follows last year’s successful women’s event which featured former World Champion and four-times British Open winner Rachael Grinham.
Beginning with a qualifying tournament on the first afternoon the event will feature players from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, Egypt Korea, India, Japan, Malaysia, France and England.
I also wish local teenager Jamie Pattison well. Jamie has been included in the main draw and will face Queenslander Thomas Calvert, ranked inside the world top 200, in the first round.
The highest ranked player to be coming to Devonport is world number 68 Rex Hedrick. Hedrick is one of four players ranked inside the top 100 who have entered. Frenchman Victor Crouin and Malaysian pair Mohd Syafiq Kamal and Addeen Idrakie are the others.
Council has been pleased to be able to help attract a quality range of national and international players to the city.
We are always seeking to support a range of different events, and therefore attracting visitors to Devonport and this is just one example.
Matches will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday from 5 p.m. the following day and from midday on Saturday 13 July with the final beginning at 1 p.m. on the Sunday.
Admission is free and refreshments will be available.

The Devonport City Council is seeking to facilitate partnerships within the community in order to build a week-long calendar of events for seniors that is inclusive of all walks of life.
The theme for Seniors Week 2019 is “Connections”.
Council is encouraging service providers and community groups to get involved by hosting an event for Seniors week which will encourage seniors to get out and about and enjoy socialising with friends and like-minded people.
You could have a picnic, a morning tea, a session on how to operate a smart phone or a history tour.
To be eligible for inclusion in the calendar, Expressions of Interest must be submitted by 16 August 2019.

The 2019 Devonport Jazz Festival is nearly here!
