Community Houses

The Devonport Community House and East Devonport Neighbourhood House provide a connection point for community, offering a space for social intraction, learning and support. 

Devonport Community House

The purpose of Devonport Community House is to build capacity in the local area.

It has three goals:

  1. Building Community
  2. Supporting People and their Families
  3. Enhancing Choices

The House believes people survive and thrive if socially connected.

Devonport Community House Services and Activities:

  • Photocopy service – charges apply
  • Information – plenty of up-to-date information on local services, activities and health issues
  • Library – borrow books of interest covering topics such as craft, self-help, children, relationships, health, government information and women’s magazines
  • NILS Agency – Centrelink clients can apply for essential household items interest free
  • Activities and support groups (youth, adults, seniors)
  • School Holiday Activities

East Devonport Community House is a warm, friendly and useful place providing lots of choices and opportunity for our community.

There’s fun, food, learning and loads of activities, programs and events to be a part of.

East Devonport Neighbourhood House Services and Activities:

  • Information, referral, and support services
  • Social groups such as Craft, Cards – 500, Mahjong, Chess, Trivia, Art, Scrabble, and Breakfast on the Deck
  • Health and wellbeing programs such as Tai Chi, Walking Group, and Wellness Wednesday
  • Special events such as afternoon teas, community meals, and bus trips
  • Larger community events including Easter Bunny is in the Neighbourhood, Christmas Party, Dude’s Day, International Women’s Day and many others
  • Food support including Sue’s Food Shed and crisis hampers
  • Garden View Café for affordable savouries, sweets and coffees
  • No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) applications
  • Volunteer opportunities

The Devonport Community Garden is an initiative of Devonport Community House through consultation with the public and was initially sponsored by Housing Tas. Got a green thumb – or just want to show the kids where vegies come from? The Community Garden, located at 2 Morris Avenue is for everyone to enjoy. With support from the Devonport City Council, local schools, businesses and neighbours, the garden provides an ideal place for people to meet, learn and develop their skills.

Community Groups & Sponsored Plots

All groups within the community are welcome to hire a plot in the Garden. Some sponsored plots available. Contact us if you or your organisation wish to sponsor a plot or need a sponsored plot. Garden rules & charges apply.

Volunteers

We encourage volunteers to donate their skills and time or just come along and potter!
Potter in the Garden on Monday and Thursday mornings from 9am-12pm. 

Opportunities

Meet new people, Work Health and Safety, toolbox safety, first aid, committee membership, helping others, cooking & sampling sessions, propagating plants, exercise & fresh air! If you can provide mentoring skills in gardening, art & design or building let us know!

A wide range of parenting reference books & magazines are available to borrow at no charge.

Special events/opportunities to be involved

Various Special Events are held at The Playhouse from time to time. For more information keep an eye out for our newsletter or ask a volunteer.

Playhouse Kiosk

Our small canteen offers Barista made local Leaping Goat coffee, drinks and snacks.

Launch into Learning and Community Playgroups

We welcome other playgroups to come along and visit the Playhouse during our opening hours – please contact us at [email protected] for information on group rates and availability.
