Devonport youth to host Music in the Square event

Devonport’s Youth Advisory Group (DEVYAG) is hosting its first official event Music in the Square (M.I.S.Q) on Friday, 18 November and they want the community to get behind them.

Devonport City Council’s Community Development Officer Erin Ford said DEVYAG members are looking for local talent and calling for young people aged 12-25 to send in their audition videos before 25 October.

She said M.I.S.Q is aimed at providing a much-needed platform for the city’s youth in a transformed Devonport Library space on level 1 of the paranaple centre from 5-8pm.

“If you like to sing, dance or play an instrument then we encourage you to get involved. You can enter as a group or go solo,” Miss Ford said.

“Videoed auditions can be up to five minutes, and we encourage parents, or family members that know someone who is talented but maybe too scared to audition, to support them to step out and have a go.”

DEVYAG member Jingjie Zheng said the youth advisory group has provided a great opportunity to get to know students from other schools.

“M.I.S.Q has given us the chance to learn how to host an event and also be part of knowing what’s happening in Devonport first, which is exciting,” she said.

William Jeeves said it was an honour for DEVYAG members to help support the younger generation in the Devonport community.

“We wanted M.I.S.Q to be a platform for young people to broadcast their talents and showcase them to the community. Any student into the arts would find it enjoyable,” he said.

Other DEVYAG members gave their insights as to why M.I.S.Q will be worth checking out:

Michael Hartree: “This is a great opportunity to head out on a Friday night and enjoy some light entertainment. We don’t always have a lot of bands performing here so this is a chance to watch some great performances.”

Isaiah Compagne: “It’s a good opportunity for young people to show off their talents. They might just sing at home but have no place to actually put their talents out there.”

Joel Badcock: “This is a fun, casual, non-competitive, non-judgemental, and free opportunity for young people to express themselves. A chance where you do you!”

Miss Ford said DEVYAG included a talented group of students from Devonport and Reece High Schools, Don and St Brendan Shaw colleges, who meet fortnightly.

She said the main aim of DEVYAG is to increase the participation of young people in their community and to provide advice to Council on a range of relevant issues.
