Devonport Regional Gallery reopening

The Devonport Regional Gallery is set to reopen its doors to visitors from Monday, 13 July 2020.
The Gallery, like all other Australian cultural institutions, was required to close to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with that, the Gallery’s programming for the remainder of 2020 was severely disrupted.
During the closure, staff have been kept busy behind the scenes with the large task of auditing the Gallery’s permanent collection of art works.
paranaple arts centre director, Geoff Dobson said, ”The art collection represents close to 50 years of focused efforts of amassing a cohesive body of works, which currently stands at about 2400 individual pieces.”
“Working with the collection inspired the staff to curate an exhibition for the Main Gallery titled Recent Acquisitions – Works from the Devonport City Council’s Permanent Collection in preparation for the day that we would reopen.”
Recent Acquisitions showcases works that have been acquired through donations, the Tidal Award, and the Devonport City Council acquisition fund from 2014 to 2020. The represented artists are Rodney Pople, Anton Holzner, Kelly Austin, Lisa Garland, Gary Greenwood, Jessie Pangas, Nerida de Jong, Gerald Makin, Katherine Hattam, Anne Morrison Joel Crosswell and Julie Fragar.
“This exhibition reflects the fact that since 2011 our focus has been on acquiring works by Tasmanian artists to build a collection that is a unique record of professional artistic activity within Tasmania and I am not sure if it is this focus, or if it is serendipity at play, but many of the selected works have a connection with the coast and the sea.”
The Little Gallery and the Main Gallery will also reopen with the exhibitions This is Us – Devonport Youth Exhibition and Portrait of a Place – Photography from the DCC Permanent Collection still in place from before the closure in March.
“I am particularly pleased that visitors will be able to enjoy This is Us as the exhibition opened and closed within the same week in March. Some 100 local young high school and college students contributed to the exhibition, which explores the theme of Australian cultural identity through imagery, texts, video art and sculpture. The young artists have a lot to say and they do so with humour and honesty.”
Portrait of a Place, features work by mostly Tasmanian photographers included in the Devonport City Council’s permanent collection. Portraiture, landscape photography and photographs of urban spaces are all included in the exhibition.
Exhibited artists are Julia Davis, Peter Dombrovskis, Lisa Garland, David Martin, Ricky Maynard, Geoffrey Parr, Troy Ruffels, Ilona Schneider and Brian Sollors. The exhibition was curated by Erin Wilson.
When visiting the gallery please be aware that all regulatory requirements will be adhered to, including social distancing, and contact tracing will also be in place. Anyone who is unwell with cold or flu-like symptoms is encouraged not to visit.
Operating hours throughout the reopening phase will be Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm,
Saturday 9.00am – 2.00pm, Sunday Closed.
Due to social distancing and limitations to visitor numbers there will be no opening or public events in conjunction with these exhibitions.
