Dementia friendly café to open next week

A café which aims to offer a friendly and safe environment for people living with dementia and their carers will open its doors in Devonport next week.

The Reflections Café will be held at the Devonport Senior Citizens Club, on Victoria Parade, between 10 am and midday every second Wednesday from 14 August. Should enough support exist the café will consider opening every Wednesday.

It is an initiative of the Munnew Day Centre, a division of Meercroft Care which supports those living with dementia and their carers. The Devonport City Council is supporting the initiative and funding has been received from the Lions Club of Devonport.

Local education institutions will be providing the food on a roster basis.

Munnew Team Leader Tammy Bromfield said the concept was based on a similar café which currently operates weekly in Ulverstone as well as in other towns and cities on the mainland.

“We felt there must be people out there who we have not seen who are struggling to find or access appropriate services,” she said.

“A lot of people also think they are the only ones dealing with this, but they are not.

“This will be a friendly and safe environment where people living with dementia and their carers can be supported and learn about the services which are available to support them.”

Ms Bromfield said Munnew’s volunteers would be on hand to provide support and assistance and the aim was to also provide some entertainment.

“This could not happen without our trained staff and volunteers who provide a high quality of care and support.”

Mayor Cr Annette Rockliff said supporting the café was the first step in Council’s vision to be seen as dementia-friendly Council.

“Munnew plays a very important role within our community and we are delighted to be able to partner with them in this venture,” she said.

“It is important that Council provides support and encouragement to such initiatives which aim to make life easier for our more vulnerable residents.”
