Council reintroduces paid parking on street meters from Monday

The Devonport City Council will reintroduce parking fees for street meters from Monday 25 May.

Council car parks will remain free for a further three weeks.

Chair of Council’s COVID-19 Response Committee Cr Leon Perry said now was considered an appropriate time to re-introduce the fees, which were suspended on 25 March until community restrictions were eased

“Businesses within the city are now beginning to reopen, albeit slowly, and it is important Council supports them by ensuring that parking opportunities exist for customers seeking to access shops,” he said.

“With schools returning from Monday, we are starting to see some degree of normalcy return to our streets and ensuring people abide by parking time restrictions is important as businesses are eager to see increased activity in the precinct.

“People will still have the opportunity to park for free, consistent with the time limits set down in car parks, until 15 June. This action will ensure the availability of parking spots outside retailers for customers, which is of benefit to our businesses who have done it tough over the last couple of months.”

Cr Perry said those parking on street meters would still have the opportunity to pay remotely by using the EasyPark App, rather than relying on cash.

Mayor Annette Rockliff said Council would continue to look at ways of providing support to the community, and particularly local businesses as they sought to get back on their feet.
