Devonport City Council is committed to protecting and enhancing our local natural environment, including our parks, reserves, waterways, and coastline. This service is for making non-emergency requests and enquiries related to environmental management.

Council’s Role vs. Other Agencies and Landowners

It is important to understand which environmental matters are managed by Council.

  • Council’s Role: Council is responsible for managing declared weeds on public land, maintaining natural reserves and bushland owned by Council, implementing local sustainability programs, and addressing minor environmental issues on Council property.

  • Other Responsibilities: The management of weeds on private property is the responsibility of the landowner. The EPA is the lead agency for significant pollution events. NRE Tas is responsible for wildlife management and issues within national parks and other state-managed land.

Pests/Vermin

This service is for reporting issues with pests and vermin, such as rodents and European wasps, on public land. Council's Environmental Health team investigates these reports to protect public health, safety, and community amenity.

Council vs. Private Property Responsibility

It is crucial to understand the difference between public and private responsibility for pest control.

  • Public Land: Council is responsible for the control of declared pests and vermin on Council-owned or managed land, such as parks, reserves, streetscapes, and around Council buildings.

  • Private Property: The owner or occupier of a property is legally responsible for managing all pests and vermin within their property boundary. If you have an issue with pests at your home or business, you will need to engage the services of a licensed professional pest controller.
