Cooling Towers

Regulated Systems

Cooling towers and warm water systems are regulated under the Public Health Act 1997 to ensure adequate maintenance and operation to minimise the opportunity for the spread of Legionella.

All businesses which have cooling towers are required to be registered with Devonport City Council and comply with the Legionella Guidelines.

Cooling towers means a device which lowers the temperature of water by evaporative cooling in which atmospheric air is in contact with falling water thereby exchanging heat or a device which incorporates a water refrigerant exchanger or water – water heat exchanger.

Warm water systems mean a system which stores water between 30o– 50oC. They can vary in size from small roof-top units to very large industrial structures and are commonly used in large industrial and commercial facilities, cool stores.

For further information or advice you can contact Council’s Environmental Health Department on 03 6424 0511.
