A boundary fence constructed of masonry or concrete may be a maximum height of 1.2 metres and be built without a building permit.
A boundary fence constructed of a material other than masonry or concrete can be a maximum height on 2.1 metres.
Front fences may be solid up to 1.2 metres height and then 1/3 transparent material up to 1.8 metres.
Fences between Private Properties
Boundary fences between neighbouring properties are the owners responsibility for erecting and repair.
Disputes between neighbours – Neighbours do not always see eye to eye. From time to time a problem will arise which need to be resolved. These problems can be varied and putting up or repairing a fence between properties is a common one. These types of problems can be sorted out if the neighbours concerned communicate with each other and know what to do if a difference of opinion arises.

The Boundary Fences Act 1908 tells us what the law is in Tasmania for erecting and repairing boundary fences.
