Bass Strait Maritime Centre Open Day

The Bass Strait Maritime Centre will host its Open Day this Sunday, 10 April, to coincide with this year’s Maritime Trail created by the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said organisers were hopeful for good weather, despite the forecast, and encouraged members of the public to head along to the Centre for a day of fun activities, live music and free entry.

Cr Rockliff said local band Play Our Way would entertain the crowds on the lawns of the Centre, with interactive activities such as float your homemade boat, rope making and exhibitions on offer.

“This Sunday is a great opportunity for people to come along and check out what the Bass Strait Maritime Centre has to offer,” Cr Rockliff said.

“If you’ve not yet checked out one of Devonport’s significant cultural facilities, then this Sunday is your chance.

“The Centre is getting back into its public programming and welcoming group visits into the museum, post COVID-19 restrictions.”

Centre Coordinator Jaydeyn Thomas said the Open Day was held in conjunction with the Maritime Trail created by the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in 2021, which was an alternative to the Wooden Boat Festival during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Thomas said patrons could check out the Centre’s latest exhibition Instrumental: Navigating and Communicating on the High Seas and experience the SS Woniora simulator.

“From 10am patrons can take part in rope making the old-fashioned way, followed by float your homemade boat at 11am,” Dr Thomas said.

“We’ll also demonstrate how to use a sextant, a maritime navigational tool, from 1-3pm, and local band Play Our Way will perform on the veranda from 1pm.

“The band is also raising much-needed funds for Solider On, which provides vital support services for veterans and their families. Marion Storm café will be open for refreshments. It’s important to note that this event is weather-dependent.”

The Bass Strait Maritime Centre Open Day will be held on Sunday, 10 April from 10am until 3pm at 6 Gloucester Avenue, Devonport. Free entry and all ages welcome.

This event is COVID-safe, and patrons are encouraged to social distance, wear a face mask. Please stay home if unwell.
