Anzac Day services back on for 2022

Devonport Anzac Day services are officially back on in the traditional format this year and organisers are encouraging the community to take part.

Organised by the Devonport RSL, this year’s Anzac Day services will feature the Dawn Service held at the Cenotaph from 5.45am, followed by the Morning Service at 11am with the march starting at 10.45am from the Senior Citizens Club.

Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff congratulated the newly appointed Devonport RSL President Shannon Wainwright and Vice President Shona Kuipers on leading the charge to see the Anzac Day services return.

Cr Rockliff said while COVID restrictions would be in place to meet State Public Health requirements, the services were open to the community.

“Anzac Day holds such a special meaning to many and it’s great to see that our community will have the opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served their country, and also recognise those who are in active service,” Cr Rockliff said.

“We know, from the community’s response to last year’s services not going ahead as usual, that there will be a lot of residents eager to attend the dawn and morning services.

“At a time when war is at the forefront of our minds due to situation in Ukraine, Anzac Day also gives us all the opportunity to reflect on how lucky we are to call Australia home.”

Devonport RSL President Shannon Wainwright said the club was proud to host this year’s Anzac Day services and expected a good turnout for both services and the march.

“Anzac Day has been one of the most important dates on Australia’s calendar since 1916 and on the 25 April this year we’re looking forward to getting back to a bit of normality,” Mr Wainwright said.

“It’s a day to recognise more than a 100,000 Australian service men and women who have lost their lives in military operations carried out in our country’s name.”

Devonport RSL Vice President Shona Kuipers said there are many ways to honour people who have served, and those who continue to serve, in Australia’s armed forces.

“We can gather together, attend a Dawn Service or an Anzac Day march. We can also wear a sprig of rosemary or a poppy as a symbol of remembrance,” she said.

“We can light a candle and stand at the end of our driveways or meet at an RSL and catch up with buddies that we have not seen in a while.”

Cr Rockliff said members of the public were invited to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph or during the services. Those who register by Friday, 22 April will have their names read out at that respective service.

Those attending Anzac Day services must comply with Public Health advice by using the QR code onsite to check in via the Check In Tas app, be mindful of social distancing, use the hand sanitiser available and wear a mask if you feel comfortable, and please stay home if unwell.
