Celebrations & Events - 2008

Don Reserve Peace Pole Dedication Ceremony

On Tuesday 27 May 2008,  a Dedication and Peace Pole Planting Ceremony was held in the Don Reserve.  Students from Devonport High School worked on a peace pole to replace the pole vandalised in January 2008.

World Harmony Run

On Wednesday 28 May 2008, a team of young runners from 16 nations attended the World Harmony Run celebration at the Devonport Library.

The team of runners arrived in Australia in late April and ran more than 15,000kms around Australia, carrying a blazing torch of peace.  The World Harmony Run included events in 100 nations.  It covered a total of 70,000km with an estimated 250,000 participants.

The runners shared their message with Hillcrest Primary School students at their school and then moved on to a concert at the Devonport Library which featured performances by Devonport Primary and Spreyton Primary School students, as well as the Goondooloo Aboriginal dancers.

The 2008 event was a tribute to Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), founder of the World Harmony Run.  Sri Chinmoy was an athlete, philosopher and humanitarian who saw sport as a powerful instrument for promoting global harmony.  Sri Chinmoy envisioned 'May each and every individual each day have a new dream of harmony'.

The run aims to bridge cultural and social barriers and all the boundaries that separate nation from nation.
