The Draft Strategic Tourism Plan is the result of extensive industry and community consultation. The process began back In December 2008 when Council invited expressions of interest from suitably qualified parties to produce a Strategic Tourism Plan for Devonport.
The key goals of the Tourism Plan were to:
- Increase market share growing the number of visitors to Devonport, their length of stay and expenditure levels in line with visitation to Tasmania;
- Establish a positive climate within Devonport's tourism sector for sustainable business development, investment and growth, increased income and employment for the local community;
- Ensure that tourism products, experiences, services and facilities meet customer expectations;
- Develop a Visitor Services Strategy for the City.
The SGL Group was awarded the contract and commenced work in April 2009.
Consultation was deemed to be a very important aspect in the development of the Tourism Plan. SGL carried out consultation via a range of methods including workshops, interviews and surveys with tourism operators, the broader business sector, Council's elected members and staff and visitors.
The draft report is the culmination of the study of background and market research, consultation, analysis and planning.
The Development Strategy has been framed around 5 key areas:
-
Management and Resourcing
-
Creating Devonport Identity
-
The Quality of Experience
-
Getting to and around
-
Attractions and Activities development
The Plan has prioritised the recommendations and actions as follows:
Priority 1 - Management and co-ordination
Administration, management and linkages are effective; supportive and enabling plans are in place; improved communication, marketing and promotional activity.
Priority 2 - Infrastructure, Access and Training
Public infrastructure to provide the catalyst for private development and entrepreneurial investment providing early runs on the board to galvanise community and industry support for the development direction. Focus on improving existing asset base and attractions.
Priority 3 - Marketing and Promotion
Once the physical infrastructure has been put in place then it is time to consolidate by more aggressive marketing, promotion and development of new businesses when visitor traffic has increased to justify investment.
