Don Reserve

Don Reserve is located in West Devonport. Covering an area of 70Ha, it consists of a narrow strip of remnant vegetation of varying width on the eastern bank of the Don River Estuary. It is situated 5 kilometres west of the city centre of Devonport. Residential properties bound the Reserve on three sides with the Don River to the west.

The Reserve is predominately woodland vegetation comprising Eucalyptus ovata (swamp gum), Eucalyptus viminalis (white gum) , and Melaleuca ericifolia (swamp paperbark).  Such trees are also a very important food source for the endangered swift parrot (Lathamus discolor) as it migrates between Tasmania and mainland Australia.

Adjoining parks include Coles Beach Coastal Reserve (northerly direction).

This Reserve also houses the Devonport Aquatic Centre.

Hiller Flora Reserve

Hiller Flora Reserve is a bushland reserve located on the corner of Lawrence Drive and Lovett Street in West Devonport (next to the Hillcrest Primary School).

In 1983 the reserve was donated to Council by the family of Mr Harvey Hiller and opened in 1986.  The reserve was determined to be developed into three separate areas, one area for trees and flowers from the Devonport area, the second area to be exclusively Tasmanian plants and the third to be developed as a rainforest.

Federal funding was obtained under the Community Employment Project (CEP) work scheme and works were undertaken by the Mersey/Devonport combined Lions Clubs, Hillcrest Primary School, Devonport City Council and the local community. Over 400hrs were spent establishing the Reserve.

In 2004, ten Green Corps participants rehabilitated the reserve by repairing the tracks, footbridges and park furniture, weeding and replanting native species.

Mary Street Wetland

The Mary Street Wetland is located on approximately 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres) of land between Mary and Caroline Streets in East Devonport opposite the East Devonport Recreation and Function Centre.  It is an enriched habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Prior to the formation of the wetland, the area was used as a landfill site for Council.  Upon its closure in 1999, local interest in re-establishing a wetland was canvassed by Council and as a result a  Working Group involving nearby stakeholders and community members was set up.
Partnerships were established between Council, the Don College, Melaleuca Home for Aged, East Devonport Primary School and local residents.

In 2000, Council successfully gained the services of a Green Corps team to rehabilitate the site. Major earth works were carried out to form an open pond as well as adjacent boardwalk and pathway. Weed control and extensive native plantings were also undertaken.

In 2001, the Friends of Mary Street Wetland Volunteer Group was formed, involving all above-mentioned stakeholders, with supervision by Council.

The Mary Street Wetland project won a State Tidy Towns Major Environmental award in 2001.

In 2002, the second stage of the walking pathway loop and seating was completed with additional assistance by a local Green Corps team and Work for the Dole team.
