Devonport Council is a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. It is comprised of twelve elected Aldermen each elected for a term of four years. The municipal area comprises a single electoral district. An election is held in October every second year at which half of the elected Aldermen retire. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected by the electors with their term of office being two years.
Decisions are made at Council meetings normally held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6.00 pm. Council meeting dates are advertised in the daily press. Council meetings are open to the public and time is set aside for questions to Council from those attending. Copies of the Agenda for Council Meetings can be inspected at the Council Chambers from the Thursday prior to the meeting and are available at the meeting.
Devonport Council is administered by a dedicated Executive Management Team comprising the General Manager, as Chief Executive Officer, and four Directors who oversee the efficient operation of the City of Devonport. The General Manager is ultimately responsible for the effective management of the Council's budget and the day to day operation of the Council.
The specific areas of responsibility of Council's four Directors are Community Services, Corporate Services, Planning & Environment and Works & Assets.
