Devonport Homemakers Centre

It's official! All approvals for the much anticipated Devonport Homemakers Centre have been issued.

Approval for construction of the above ground works for the centre on Stony Rise Road was delivered personally by the Mayor of Devonport Alderman Steve Martin to Gerry Harvey.

Mayor Martin and Council General Manager Ian McCallum met with Mr Harvey during a trip to Sydney last week to discuss economic development for the City.

"The Homemakers Centre represents a significant boost to the local economy and is expected to provide employment for up to 100 employees and subcontractors during the construction phase alone," Mayor Martin said.

"On completion, the centre will provide employment for around 200 people, injecting an estimated $7.5 million in wages into the local community," Mayor Martin added.

Devonport based company Fairbrother has completed the underground works and now the substantial above ground construction of the Harvey Norman building is underway.

"It's exciting to see the above ground building underway and the anticipation will build over the next 12 months as the development takes shape," Mayor Martin said.

"There is a challenging time frame for the builders, but Fairbrother is experienced in delivering large projects and we anticipate parts of the building will be operational in time for Christmas," Mayor Martin added.

The major feature of the Devonport Homemakers Centre will be a new Harvey Norman Store and a large K & D Mitre 10 Home Handyman and Trade Centre.

Harvey Norman will invest $25 million in the Centre and will bring the Company's investment in Tasmania to around $100 million.
