Building a Family Friendly City

The Council recognises that all children deserve a good start in life and children and their families play an integral role in determining the future of Devonport. In support of this ethos, the Council initiated the development of a policy and strategic plan relevant to children between the ages of 0-12 years. Adopted in 2004, the aim of this policy and strategic plan is to assist the Council and relevant groups and organisations to develop Devonport as a family friendly city.

Council facilitates the working group which oversees the plan and is made up of services which represent children’s and families needs in Devonport. The aim of the Children and Family Services Group is to build a family friendly city by:

  • Linking with Council and implementing its Family Policy and Plan.
  • Building strong networks between the services which support, educate and provide opportunities for young families in our community.
  • Monitoring the needs and issues of concern for young families in our city.
  • Advocating for the children and families in our city.

“A child friendly community is one which acknowledges the rights, needs and interests of children and builds these into its decision making processes” – National Agenda for Early Childhood

Adopted in 2004 and revised in 2007, the aim of the Devonport City Council Family and Children’s Services Policy and Strategic Plan is to assist the Council and relevant groups and organisations to develop Devonport as a family friendly city.

Raising Children Network

rcn horiz

The Raising Children Network is a website for Australian mothers, fathers, grandparents and anyone else who has the responsibility for the care of children. They aim to meet the information needs of a wide range of users, from the just curious, to those looking for assistance with particular problems or issues, or those wanting to explore the science behind modern thinking on the care of children.

This is also a website for the wide range of professionals and agencies who work with parents on the front line every day – general practitioners, maternal and child health nurses, child care workers, preschool teachers, school teachers, social workers, psychologists and so on. Professionals can refer parents to the site, or download and distribute information from the site to the parents they are working with.

Finally, the Raising Children Network believes that businesses and community organisations can be an important part of the fabric of parent support in your community. They will build an information base that will assist employers, sports clubs, and churches to understand the needs of parents and to support organisations in their aspirations to become more family-friendly.
